Article 226 empowers every High Court to issue writs — habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, quo warranto and certiorari — for enforcement of fundamental rights and for any other purpose. The remedy is extraordinary and discretionary.
Before filing, evaluate: (i) is there an alternative efficacious remedy, (ii) does the matter involve arbitrariness, violation of natural justice, or fundamental rights, (iii) are you within reasonable time. A carefully drafted writ, supported by clean pleadings, is often faster than a civil suit.
